 Travex Tips
  • The Museum parking area and nearby public parking areas are available (relatively few)
  • Do not self drive to museums and heritage sites as they are located in crowded old city areas and parking is a scarcity there; you are rather advised to use public transport.
  • Wear easy to slip in and out footwear as many places would need you to remove your footwear.

Crab hunting in the Arabian waters is an alternative night-time UAE excursion to yet another shopping centre or five-star hotel that is quickly gaining niche popularity among residents and tourists alike. This activity will take you north of the glittering state of Dubai to the laid-back Emirate of Umm Al Quwain.

If you haven’t been to the other six Emirates yet, then your trip to Umm Al Quwain will give you an insight to the amazing scenery and natural resources the UAE has to offer. The charm of Umm Al Quwain lies in its natural habitat which is a perfect balance between the quiet backwaters and lush mangrove islands. You arrive and instantly notice the slower pace of life, which in many ways reflects the traditional Emirati way.

Crab hunting - a key attraction of Um Al Quwain – is a unique outdoor experience done during the night, preferably under a full moon at low tide. Either perched from the side of a boat or wading through the dense marsh land, there is a certain thrill to the hunt. Armed with waterproof torches and spears, hunters stalk the shallow waters for crabs that are out for feeding, only to turn into dinner themselves.

Spearing all crustaceans within your reach is not for the faint-hearted, but will prove to be a new and exciting activity whether you’re alone or in the company of friends or family.

Boats with glass bottoms are also available to provide a view of the aquatic life; apart from crabs, the mangroves are also home to squid, turtles, and a multitude of fish. The hunt begins at sundown and usually lasts for an hour or two.

Flamingo Beach Resort offers crab hunting sessions with professional assistance every night from 8:00pm and now is the ideal time as the season is usually between Septembers to April, every year.

When you book the package, it includes pick-up from your location, the use of boat and crab hunting equipment, dinner buffet at the resort, your catch of the day cooked up afterwards, and a car that will wait for you at the resort to bring you back to your hotel or residence.

Or for the true outdoorsman, you can set-up camp and go on the hunt yourself. Just remember to bring a bucket and your sense of adventure! We definitely suggest crab hunting as a must-do activity and for sure one that will stand out as an once in a lifetime experience.
